It’s the Future, Jim, But Not As We Know It talked to historian Michael Bess when he visited CNS-UCSB. Bess, Chancellor's Professor of History at Vanderbilt University, argued in a seminar at CNS that sci-fi blockbusters like Star Wars, Star Trek and Blade Runner mislead us. Although they depict a future filled with sophisticated technology, the people they portray are basically the same as today’s humans. Bess says that’s unrealistic, given today’s trends in biotechnology. It’s time for mainstream science fiction to face up to a future in which humans will use pharmaceuticals, genetic interventions and bioelectronics to get ahead. Read the article here.
