INSCITES
Insights on Science and Technology for Society (INSCITES) will form teams of undergraduate and graduate Student Teaching Scholars from departments of science, engineering, political science, economics and history, who will develop and teach modular, general education courses that focus on the science, economics and sociology of innovative technologies that are an intrinsic part of our everyday life. These teams will work under the direction of Dr. Evelyn Hu (Electrical Engineering and Materials, Director, California NanoSystems Institute, (CNSI), Dr Fiona Goodchild (Education Director, CNSI) and Dr. Patrick McCray (History). One of the first priorities will be to develop a module on the impact of Nanotechnology, in collaboration with graduate fellows in the NSF Center for Nanotechnology in Society. The first course will be offered in Winter Quarter 2007.
The Practice of Science
Sponsored by the California NanoSystems Institute, this two-quarter course is aimed at undergraduate students with potential careers spanning experimental science and technology. The course includes lectures, scientific presentations, and invited talks by research scientists from several departments and local industry to provide a broad and balanced perspective. It also addresses the ethical and societal responsibilities of scientists in our modern culture. The course is taught by Dr. David Awschalom, (Physics) and Dr. Evelyn Hu (Electrical Engineering and Materials, Director, California Nanosystems Institute, (CNSI). Lectures on laboratory technique, advanced instrumentation, data analysis, and ethics of research will be accompanied by practical exercises, laboratory visits, campus facility tours, and state-of-the-art research projects. Students will be required to analyze data, draw conclusions, and defend their interpretations. This course is an opportunity to gain an appreciation and understanding of experimental science and engineering, and its importance in a scientific career. The course is now offered in Winter and Spring quarters and is in its third year of operation.
